The Speed T4 demonstrates Triumph\'s attempt to increase accessibility for its 400cc motorbike, but what distinguishes it from the upgraded 2025 Speed 400?

Let\'s investigate.

Highlights

The visual differences between T4\'s paint schemes and graphics are noticeable.

The features of the two motorcycles are almost the same.

The MY25 Speed 400 costs Rs 23,000 more than the Speed T4.

Triumph Motorcycles has introduced the Speed T4 to its 400cc contemporary classic portfolio in India. The Speed T4 is presently Triumph\'s most reasonably priced model in India, and it is positioned as a more approachable variant of the Speed 400. In addition, the British manufacturer has introduced the redesigned 2025 Speed 400, which comes with enhancements and fresh paint jobs.

Here\'s a deeper look at the differences between these two models:

Design & Color Options

At first glance, the Triumph Speed T4 and Triumph Speed 400 seem to have very similar designs and share many parts. Subtle differences separate the two, though. While the Speed 400 retains its original look, the Speed T4 has a "400" logo on its fuel tank and unique reflecting decals on its wheels. Similar parts of both bikes include the single-piece seat, alloy wheels, taillight, contoured fuel tank, and circular headlamp.

In addition to the previously provided Phantom Black, the MY25 Speed 400 is now available in three more color options: Racing Yellow, Pearl Metallic White, and Racing Red. Conversely, Metallic White, Phantom Black, and Cocktail Red Wine are the available colors for the Speed T4. The two types are easier to recognize visually because of their unique artwork colors.

Engine & Performance

The identical 398cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine powers both bikes. Peak outputs differ from one another, though. While the Speed T4 is set to produce 30.6 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 36 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm, the Speed 400 produces 39.5 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 37.5 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. Triumph claims that on the Speed T4, 85 per cent of the torque, or around 31 Nm, begins to apply at 2,500 rpm for better low-end torque, smoother riding in lower and mid-speed ranges, and less frequent gear changes.

Both bikes have a slipper clutch and a 6-speed gearbox, but their peak speeds are different. The Speed 400 can push up to 145 kmph, while the Speed T4 achieves its maximum at 135 kmph.

Suspension and Hardware

When comparing the Speed T4 to the Speed 400, careful considerations have been made to lower the price of the T4. The suspension is one of the main distinctions. While the Speed 400 has a more expensive 43 mm USD big-piston fork, the Speed T4 has a telescopic fork. Still, the rear mono-shock is the same on both motorcycles.

The brake systems are the same, with a 230 mm disc with a floating calliper at the back and a 300 mm disc with a 4-piston radial calliper up front, both with ABS.

Another distinction is the exhaust system; the Speed T4s are made to sound throatier than the Speed 400s. The MRF Nylogrip Zapper tyres that come with the Speed T4 are more affordable than the MRF Steel Brace or Apollo Alpha H1 radials that are installed on the Speed 400. The tyres on both bikes, however, are the same size: the front tyres are 110/70-R17 and the rear tyres are 140/70-R17.

Dimensions & Weight

Even though the two motorcycles\' dimensions seem comparable, there are a few subtle variations. For example, the Speed T4\'s handlebar is 827 mm, whereas the Speed 400\'s handlebar measures 829 mm. The two motorcycles also have somewhat different heights; the Speed T4 is 2 mm higher than the Speed 400 (1096 mm). Furthermore, the Speed T4 has a larger wheelbase than the Speed 400—1406mm against 1386mm. Additionally, the Speed 400 weighs 1 kilogram less than the Speed T4 at 179 kg.

Features

Both variants include many of the same characteristics, such as the semi-digital instrument cluster, LED headlamp, and tail light. One significant distinction between the two, though, is that the Speed 400 has a switchable traction control system, whilst the Speed T4 does not. Other than this, the equipment of the two motorcycles is comparable.

Price

The modifications made to the Speed T4 are reflected in the pricing differential between the two variants. The MY25 Speed 400 is priced at Rs 2.40 lakh (ex-showroom pricing), while the Speed T4 is priced at Rs 2.17 lakh, undercutting the Speed 400 by Rs 23,000.
