In a significant move towards sustainable mobility, Maruti Suzuki has launched the Grand Vitara CNG in India.

This is the company’s first factory-fitted CNG offering in the mid-size SUV segment, reflecting its commitment to expanding eco-friendly vehicle options. The launch comes at a time when fuel prices continue to rise and consumer interest in alternative fuel vehicles is growing.

With the Grand Vitara already gaining attention for its hybrid variants, the introduction of a CNG model adds another layer of choice for buyers seeking a balance between fuel economy and practicality.

Maruti’s decision to offer this model in select variants also signals its intent to make cleaner fuel more accessible without sacrificing key features.

Grand Vitara CNG – What’s New?

The Maruti Grand Vitara CNG launched in India is now available in two variants: Delta and Zeta. These trims fall in the mid and upper-mid range of the Grand Vitara lineup, offering a mix of essential features and value.

This new addition is powered by Maruti Suzuki’s tried-and-tested 1.5-litre K-series DualJet engine, adapted to run on both petrol and CNG. While there is a drop in power output when running on CNG, the focus here is on cost savings and lower emissions rather than performance alone.

The highlight is its claimed fuel efficiency of 26.6 km/kg, making it one of the most efficient CNG SUVs in the country.

Engine and Performance Details

Under the hood, the Grand Vitara CNG houses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that also supports CNG.

In petrol mode, the engine delivers 103 PS and 136 Nm of torque. In CNG mode, output drops slightly to 88 PS and 121.5 Nm. The CNG variants are paired with a 5-speed manual transmission.

While not aimed at spirited driving, the Grand Vitara CNG promises refined performance for city commuting and highway cruising. The dual-fuel setup provides flexibility, especially for buyers who prioritize fuel cost over raw power.

Features and Technology

Despite being a CNG variant, Maruti Suzuki has ensured that key features are retained in both trims:

  • SmartPlay infotainment system with touchscreen interface
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity
  • LED DRLs and projector headlamps
  • Rear parking sensors and camera
  • Steering-mounted controls and cruise control (Zeta variant)
  • Dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and ISOFIX child seat anchors
  • CNG-specific instrumentation like dual fuel meters and a switch for seamless mode change

The interior layout and space remain unchanged, with the CNG tank placed in the boot, slightly reducing luggage space.

Price and Variants Breakdown

Price of Maruti Grand Vitara CNG is available in the following two variants:

  • Delta (MT) – ₹13.48 lakh (ex-showroom)
  • Zeta (MT) – ₹15.62 lakh (ex-showroom)

This pricing places the CNG models about ₹95,000 higher than their petrol counterparts. While it is not the most affordable option in the segment, the extra cost is likely to be offset by lower running expenses over time.

Bookings for the Grand Vitara CNG are open across Nexa dealerships, with deliveries expected to begin soon.

How It Stacks Up Against Competitors

Currently, the Grand Vitara CNG stands largely unchallenged in the factory-fitted CNG SUV category.

Though aftermarket CNG kits are available for other SUVs, Maruti’s offering benefits from warranty coverage, better integration, and safety assurances that come with factory installation.

With Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos dominating the compact SUV market in petrol and diesel formats, the Grand Vitara CNG adds a unique angle for buyers looking to avoid traditional fuels.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which shares its platform with the Grand Vitara, is expected to launch a CNG variant soon, but Maruti has gained first-mover advantage in this space.

Target Audience and Market Expectations

The Grand Vitara CNG targets practical buyers, especially those living in urban areas with access to CNG infrastructure. It also appeals to environmentally conscious customers who want to reduce their carbon footprint without switching to full electric or hybrid options.

Additionally, fleet owners and long-distance commuters may find the low running cost attractive, especially when paired with the SUV’s overall comfort and reliability.

With rising demand for cost-efficient of Grand Vitara CNG fuel efficiency alternatives, Maruti Suzuki expects this new variant to strengthen the Grand Vitara's position in the market.

Is It Worth Considering?

Pros:

  • Excellent fuel economy at 26.6 km/kg
  • Factory-fitted CNG setup ensures safety and better reliability
  • Offers essential features even in mid-level trims
  • Backed by Maruti’s strong service network

Cons:

  • Only available with manual transmission
  • Reduced power in CNG mode
  • Slightly less boot space due to the CNG tank

The Grand Vitara CNG is ideal for buyers who prioritize daily savings and cleaner fuel use. While it lacks an automatic option and some premium features, its real value lies in long-term economy and Maruti’s extensive support network.

Final Thoughts

The introduction of the Grand Vitara CNG reinforces Maruti Suzuki’s leadership in the CNG vehicle space.

At a time when consumers are becoming more fuel- and environment-conscious, this launch offers a smart middle ground between performance, affordability, and sustainability.

By entering the CNG SUV market with a well-equipped product, Maruti is not just offering more options, it is also setting new benchmarks in fuel-efficient SUV mobility.

Whether you're a city dweller looking to cut down on running costs or a commuter aiming to reduce emissions, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara CNG might just be the right fit.
